On October 11th 2003 Her Majesty Queen of Sweden and the Mentor Foundation Board of Trustees with its Chairman Fritz Kaiser, proudly presented the winning projects of Mentor's newly established "Prevention Awards" series at a Gala Evening at the Opera in Zurich, Switzerland. The Mentor Innovation Award honors an innovative and promising project for the prevention of drug misuse by children and young people. The Award contains a prize sum of Euro 100,000 for further project support and 1 year's mentoring support by a Mentor Foundation Ambassador. Goals for a Better Life. The Colombianitos Soccer Club, Goals for a Better Life, aims to reduce drug addiction and crime and to promote education through participation in a community based youth soccer program. Soccer's popularity is tapped to encourage young people to leave the street life behind and to succeed in the classroom. Every participating youth must be enrolled and attending school. Three times a week each child has a soccer training session with professional coaches at the soccer field. Competitions among teams are held for prizes, and community and recreation events are organized on a regular basis. Kit and equipment is provided, giving each player a sense of identity as part of a team. The coaches provide the players with a strong role-model, and the game provides them with new ambition and alternatives to life on the streets. Having obtained access into an area which was hostile towards outside intervention, Colombianitos now uses its acceptance and facilities to allow other health services to provide basic care and education to the community.
UNICEF Children's Rights Award inaugurated at 'Beyond Sport' summit in London
LONDON, United Kingdom, 10 July 2009 – As the inaugural 'Beyond Sport' summit took place in London this week, UNICEF presenting a special award for an inspirational project that uses sport to ensure children's rights.
UNICEF UK Ambassador Lord Puttnam presented the first UNICEF Children's Rights Award to Goals for a Better Life, a programme run by the Colombianitos non-governmental organization in Colombia. The programme uses sport, music and other recreational activities to reduce the devastating consequences of violence and terrorism on the lives of Colombia's children.
The UNICEF honour is one of a series of Beyond Sport Awards recognizing sport-led social innovation initiatives worldwide. Beyond Sport is an international NGO that celebrates and supports positive change through sport.
'Play is a right'
Ana Arizabaleta of Colombianitos commented on the value of the award. "It is huge, because trying to get children back to school is really tough, and sport can help us do that," she said. "It also recognizes the importance of the right to play itself.
"Sport is important in terms of the non-formal part of a child's education and has particular value for children from troubled backgrounds," she added.
"Play is a right, and sport is a fantastic tool for promoting and fulfilling children's rights, as demonstrated by Colombianitos," Lord Puttnam said at the award presentation. "We have seen sport lead to real change, particularly in the area of girls' education, both getting and keeping them in school."
The other short-listed nominees for the UNICEF UK award were Greenhouse, a UK-based organization; the Kids League in Uganda; and the Play Soccer Network, which reaches across Africa. The finalists were chosen from over 300 entries reaching more than 80 countries that submitted applications to this year's inaugural award.
Beyond Sport Award winners receive £10,000 and a substantial package of technical support to help their programmes grow and become more sustainable.
Interaction with world leaders
The awards were presented as part of a three-day summit, from 7 to 9 July, bringing together the world's best sport and development projects. Participants had the opportunity to nurture their initiatives by interacting with leading international sports organizations, corporate partners, and political and world leaders.
The summit was led by influential global figures such as former British Prime Minister Tony Blair, Archbishop Desmond Tutu, Prince Faisal Al Hussein of Jordan, London Mayor Boris Johnson, multi-Olympic gold medallists Ian Thorpe and Michael Johnson, and Wilfred Lemke, Special Advisor to the UN Secretary General.

'K.Lierse SK' - in Colombia
Een voetbalploeg met een hart voor de straatkinderen van Colombia
Goed doel
In samenwerking met de Stad Lier en Child Focus steunt Lierse de vzw Agoriad en de 'internationale dag van het vermiste kind'.
De vzw Agoriad werkt voor de straatkinderen in Colombia. In het stadion wordt vanavond en zondag, als Lierse - Ol. Charleroi,
een collecte gehouden. Maged Samy zal namens Lierse de opgehaalde som verdubbelen.

Dat was zowat de aanzet voor onze actie ten voordele van de vzw Agoriad. Tijdens onze 2 laatste thuismatchen organiniseren we een grote inzamelactie voor Agoriad.
We doen hiervoor een beroep op alle Liersesupporters. Agoriad, dat binnenkort ook samenwerkt met Child Focus, wil zich inzetten voor de toekomst van de Colombiaanse straatkinderen. Agoriad garandeert dat de winsten worden overgemaakt aan de ‘Fundacion Niños de Los Andes’ en de 'Fundacion Colombianitos' die het geld gebruiken voor de opvang van Colombiaanse straatkinderen.
Ze doen dat onder meer door de kinderen, jongens en meisjes voor en na de schooltijd op te vangen,
ze eten en kleren te geven en ze te laten voetballen.
Agoriad haalt kinderen van de straat, weg van de misdaad, weg van de drugs,
door het promoten van een gezonde levensvisie via de sport. Dat recht, om te spelen en te sporten is één van de fundamentele rechten van elk kind. Denk daar even aan als u op het Lisp die vrouwen ziet staan in hun bontgekleurde kleren en hun collectebussen.
Agoriad, de stad Lier, het bestuur en de spelers van Lierse zijn u nu al dankbaar.
Wees mild en geef. Geef om de kinderen van Colombia.
